MLS Career Paths

IU-SLIS offers multiple ways for you to pursue your interests and obtain a rewarding career within the diverse field of Library Science.

Because many MLS career paths require extensive knowledge of a second discipline, IU-SLIS has developed Joint Degree Programs, enabling students to earn a Masters in Library Science and another subject at the same time. Participating programs include: African American and African Diaspora Studies, African Studies, Art History, Central Eurasian Studies, Comparative Literature, English, Folklore and Ethnomusicology, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Journalism, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Law, Music, Public Affairs, and Russian and East European Studies.

Students who do not wish to obtain a full master's in a second subject can still choose to tailor their MLS degree to meet the demands of a specific market by completing a formal specialization. Approved Specializations within the Masters programs include: African Studies Librarianship, Archives and Records Management, Art Librarianship, Chemical Information, Children's and Young Adult Services, Digital Libraries, Library Technology Management, Music Librarianship, and Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship.

There are still many other ways to specialize your MLS degree. The list of Career Paths below can help you identify ways of focusing your professional interests and obtain the knowledge and skills needed for working in a particular aspect or area of Library Science. These paths can help familiarize you with various career options, but you will want to work closely with your adviser to ensure that you are taking the best courses to meet your career objectives and all degree requirements.

There is flexibility within the MLS electives to tailor your degree in many ways. Take time to think about your strengths and career goals. Your individualized concentration or focus can be unique.
